Hey guys, as most of you know I’m the mod of Frigid Drift. Earlier today I had a turning point in my life that I’d like to share to get your opinions on my options.
Alright, so I’ve been having a little tug on my heart for a while about the concept of “original ideas”. The first instance was a week before E3 during the Nintendo Pre-Conference when the president of Nintendo was describing the plaque on his wall, which was the Japanese word for “Originality”. It struck me then that something completely original could be so great, such as Mario, Zelda, and Kirby. All completely unique ideas that were stunningly successful.
The second instance that I encountered was when I uploaded my Cold-Blooded Frigid Drift animations to YouTube. A week or so later I was at over 2000 views and YouTube invited me to join their monetization program. I realized I wouldn’t be able to truely monetize my videos because of all of the MLP references and unoriginality due to the pony fanbase.
The most recent instance was earlier today when I saw the finalists for the “Design a Pony” contest. I was sure I wanted Frigid to be in the actual show, but everyone warned me that I would lose the rights to her if I allowed Hasbro to use her. I love Frigid as a character, and I’ve put so much effort into developing her, but I’m beginning to feel bad about continuing due to not being able to expand.
Here’s my situation: I’m 19 without a job, and being able to monetize what I create will really help me with school and other finances.
So here’s my proposition: I can extract the Hasbro copyrights out of my blog (change character names, remove cutie marks, humanize the characters). Basically, I’ll keep what’s mine and start over with that. Possibly start a different blog because the change will be so significant. I’m so close to 4000 followers on Frigid Drift, but I don’t feel like I’ve earned them thanks to ponies, which served as a catalyst for my success. I really want to own something that’s my own creation, possibly have helpers, and be able to monetize and sell merchandise of my creations.
Thanks for reading this, and please let me know what you think I should do!
