Dear Bronies, Friends, Fellow Humans,
I write this not as part of an organization, or a group, but as a fan of colorful ponies. Like you, I was drawn to My Little Pony for good reasons, and knew that my life would become better if I interacted with people who shared a similar interest. I laughed with fellow bronies, helped organize events where we could meet up and have a good time, and met a lot of interesting people along the way. But some time in the past few months we’ve reached a critical point in the fandom, and it’s time to address a problem that, until now, has been allowed to grow unchallenged.
Remember when the biggest insult was that your custom Trixie mane was “just a teensy bit off”? Or when your strongest argument was over who is best pony? The time when your utmost concern was making sure everypony had a good time?
I always viewed drama as very popcorn.gif, something that comes with the territory in any fandom or other group of people. And at first, it was relatively tame. It never affected me personally, so I stuck to the sidelines, where I believed that I could do no damage.
Until today.
A close friend came into our chat room and was visibly shaken. This person told us that someone in the fandom was threatening to kill themselves over a dispute they had with another party in the fandom. Peeking at the relevant material (blogs, tweets, etc), it seemed like a case of bullying, which is not cool either. However, it quickly became apparent that the person who threatened suicide lashed out at the other party maliciously in the past, and the two had actually exchanged blows numerous times over the past months. It is unclear who started it, and neither side will back down until the other is completely destroyed.
Some of us may think that drama is drama, and sitting back and not getting involved is the right thing to do. This was my view, until the drama became personal. I did not ask to be roped in. However, when people close to me are shaking with fear over what to do, begging everyone for the person’s home address so they can contact the authorities in the area to get this person help, I couldn’t sit back any longer. I urge you to please, please help me end the drama, before it affects you personally.
I’d like to ask that, as a community, we take the date of October 10th, 2012, the second anniversary of the 4th Generation of MLP, and declare it a special Pony Day. On this day, I beg the community to join me in celebrating each other. No threats, no violence, no hate. Take down the endless petitions. Go through your tumblr and delete the hateful posts. Do anything you can to stop the pointless mudslinging. If you are thinking of writing something hateful, lay down your arms. If you see something mean pop onto your tumblr, don’t reblog it. Let’s refresh the community.Then, watch ponies. For the rest of the day, if you feel any sort of negative feelings towards someone else, take a “pony break”, and watch your favorite episode. Or rewatch one you haven’t seen in a long time.
If this plea falls on deaf ears, well, at least I did something. I hope you can do something too. If you feel the same way, feel free to sign the bottom of this letter with your name, your handle, anything, and retweet it, retumblr, reblog, or just save it to your desktop and look back on it whenever you need to. Relax. Colorful ponies are waiting on greener pastures.
